Honest Weight Food Co-op
Honest Weight is a member-owned and-operated consumer cooperative that is committed to providing the community with affordable, high quality natural foods and products for healthy living. Our mission is to promote more equitable, participatory and ecologically sustainable ways of living. We welcome all who choose to participate in a community which embraces cooperative principles, shares resources, and creates economic fairness in an atmosphere of cooperation and respect for humanity and the earth.
Brief History
Success led the buying club to file a Certificate of Incorporation on April 29, 1976. The address at this time was 20 Elm Street and the name “Honest Weight” was taken from the Toledo Scales motto “Honest Weight-No Springs”. Within a year monthly orders grew so large that the Goldbergs’ basement was no longer large enough.
Early in 1977 the board and members voted 14-9 to rent a storefront. Aided by a site selection committee, a new organizational structure, and a lot of cleanup and carpentry work, the original Quail Street store opened in March 1977. During that year, the Co-op hired its first paid staff and established the Food Policy.
Breaking with the buying club approach, members of Honest Weight agreed to sell to the public. With this decision sales volume tripled the first year forcing the co-op to expand into the space next door. In the early years Honest Weight sold mostly bulk and dairy products. Produce was added in the late 1970's. In 1981, with a 33% increase in sales, the membership had an option to purchase the building. At a general membership meeting they voted a resounding 97-7 to do so. Honest Weight assumed ownership of 112 Quail Street in May of 1982.
Between 1980-1986, sales increased and the store continued to expand its retail space. Still the co-op was bursting at its seams. Working and shopping conditions were uncomfortable and staff and members wanted more space. At the 1987 Annual Meeting the members voted to empower the board to search for a larger building.
After years of searching, the present site was selected. On February 12, 1995 members voted 150 to 7 to approve the leasing of this space and Honest Weight opened in its new home at 484 Central Avenue on Nov. 11, 1995.
