WAMC/Northeast Public Radio; is a regional public radio network serving parts of seven northeastern United States. These include New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. Stations and translators are in ten locations thoughout the region. Alan Chartock is Chair and Executive Director of the network. Our studios and offices are located at 318 Central Avenue in Albany, NY.
WAMC Linda Norris Auditorium; The new Linda Norris Auditorium is a lively, crisp, clean venue that supports the music well and treats rich ensembles like the Leontovych with a friendly sound that allows them to hear each other well. Area audiences are used to cushiony acoustics in halls like the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, Unions Memorial Chapel and Kiggins Hall at Emma Willard School in Troy. The Norris Auditorium at WAMC has a different sound, neither better nor worse than those halls, but acoustically brighter and more biting.
The Albany Symphony Orchestra is one of this regions oldest and most revered; music and cultural organizations, having won numerous national awards for its adventurous programming of contemporary music and innovative educational efforts involving area schools for more than 72 years. We are the oldest and only professional symphony orchestra based in the Capital Region, serving more than 150,000 persons within a 75-mile radius covering more than seven counties and parts of three states.
Capital Repertory Theatre; is proud to be one of seventy-two professional theatres in LORT, the League of Resident Theatres. Today, these affiliated theatres provide thousands of artists with a support system for developing new work as well as reviving classics and perennial favorites. Hundreds of thousands of people now have the opportunity to experience the highest caliber of performance right in their own communities.
In the 1960s, when the not-for-profit arts scene was initiated with support from the federal government, the world of theatre was a different place than today. New York City was truly THE theatrical center of the country. A few select cities were lucky enough to be stopping points for a Broadway show's national tour, but there were literally no professional resident theatres outside the Big Apples Great White Way. In fact, the Actors Equity Association had very little means of working with theatrical groups outside of New York, except for summer stock or touring venues.
The construction of The Egg; began in 1966 and was completed twelve years later in 1978. The Egg was designed by Wallace Harrison for all the people of New York State and to accommodate many events and performances.
Architecturally, The Egg is without precedent. From a distance it seems as much a sculpture as a building. Though it appears to sit on the main platform, the stem that holds The Egg actually goes down through six stories deep into the Earth. The Egg keeps its shape by wearing a girdle - a heavily reinforced concrete beam that was poured along with the rest of the shell. This beam helps transmit The Eggs weight onto the supporting pedestal and gives the structure an ageless durability that belies its nickname.
